The Return That Never Was – GIFFT Toronto
The documentary narrates the personal experience and memories of the displaced refugees and interned people, and how they experienced and felt the Turkish invasion in July 1974. Traumatic experiences of children, adolescents, and adults were imprinted and remain in their memories and souls 50 years later.
The 88-minute documentary is a narrative from 18 people who lived in Cyprus before the Turkish invasion in 1974. It recounts life in the village of Achna and the surrounding areas of Kantara and Risokarpaso, focusing on the rich agricultural economy and social life.
The villagers lived harmoniously, engaging in local agriculture, sports, and community events. Towns like Famagusta were economically significant, contributing heavily to the Cypriot economy and tourism industry.
