Shared Journeys: Greek and Chinese Immigrant Stories in Canada
with Special guests Prof. Sakis Gekas and Author/Researcher Arlene Chan
Join historian Dr. Sakis Gekas, Hellenic Heritage Foundation Chair of Modern Greek History, Associate Professor at York University and his team with celebrated author Arlene Chan for a compelling TGE Talk Series exploring the cultural intersections and unique challenges of the Greek and Chinese immigrant experiences in Canada. As representatives of two of the world’s oldest civilizations, they will reflect on the shared values, traditions, and struggles that connect these communities across time and continents. This dialogue offers fresh insight into identity, resilience, and the evolving Canadian story.
As part of The Greek Experience 2025, this TGE Talk features an enriching conversation between Dr. Sakis Gekas, Hellenic Heritage Foundation Chair of Modern Greek History and professor of history at York University, and Arlene Chan, author and expert on Chinese Canadian heritage. Drawing from deep historical and cultural knowledge, the two will explore the journeys of Greek and Chinese immigrants to Canada—highlighting both the shared experiences and distinct challenges faced by these communities.
With Greece and China standing as two of the world’s most ancient civilizations, the discussion will spotlight common threads: strong family structures, deep-rooted cultural pride, entrepreneurial spirit, and the ongoing balance between assimilation and cultural preservation. From early immigration waves to contemporary identity, this talk invites the audience to reflect on how cultural legacies shape the present and future of Canada’s diverse society.
No matter where our journey began—whether from the Aegean islands, the mountains of Epirus, or the villages of Guangdong—our stories echo a common thread: resilience, hope, and the pursuit of a better life. At The Greek Experience, we celebrate these parallel paths of immigration, the sacrifices made by our parents and grandparents, and the beautiful cultures they carried with them. It’s in these shared experiences that we discover not only what makes us unique, but also what unites us—across generations, borders, and traditions.
